Bob was born and raised in Madison, Georgia and graduated from Morgan County High School. He received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, which he attended from 1982 to 1986.
Upon graduation from the Naval Academy, Bob followed a long family tradition and selected the U.S. Marine Corps option and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in May of 1986. After a year at The Basic School and the Infantry Officer’s course at Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines as an infantry officer. He had the privilege of commanding Marines in various roles as part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit to 29 Palms, California, Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico and ultimately numerous countries in the Mediterranean. He later served as a Series Officer at the Recruit Training Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina where he led multiple series of Drill Instructors in training future Marines.
While at Parris Island, Bob was one of two officers throughout the Marine Corps selected for the Marine Corps Funded Law Education Program. He attended law school while on active duty under a full scholarship and finished first in his class. Following law school, and the Naval Justice School in Newport, Rhode Island, Bob was reassigned to Parris Island as a Judge Advocate General, where he provided legal service to all Marines and sailors at the Recruit Training Depot and all Marine Recruiting Stations east of the Mississippi.
Upon leaving the Marine Corps in 1997, Bob returned to his hometown of Madison and began his private law practice. Bob’s practice focuses on estate and trust planning and administration, elder law, and business planning with an emphasis on taxation. He represents clients throughout the state. He obtained his LLM from the University of Alabama with an emphasis on estate and gift tax in order to better serve his clients. He takes a unique personal approach to dealing with his clients, getting to know them and their personal needs. He takes pride in using his expertise and years of experience to customize plans to fit their desires.
Bob has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Academy, his Juris Doctor from Mercer University, and his Master of Laws in Taxation from the University of Alabama.
Bob has been very involved in community affairs. He is a Director at the Bank of Madison and Chairman of the Bank’s Asset and Liability Committee. He served on the Morgan County Board of Education for 12 years (as a member and as Chairman), the Downtown Development Authority for Madison, Chairman of the Madison Chamber of Commerce, as a Deacon in his church, and as a Director of the Highland Hills Retirement Village.
Bob’s hobbies include sports, reading, fishing and picking the bluegrass banjo. He enjoys spending time with his family.
“Several years ago, my husband, Dr. David Goodchild, and I scheduled a consultation with Bob to discuss our wills. As so often happens, we had put it off for far too long. Along with our old wills, we brought a list of our concerns and questions to the meeting. Bob was extremely patient and thorough answering our questions and addressing our concerns. He recommended, and we established, a revocable living trust based plan. The plan provided estate tax protection and at Bob’s prompting, thoughtful trust planning after our deaths.
Shortly after our meeting, David was hospitalized. Bob’s help was invaluable during this time. He and his staff worked tirelessly and in record time to transfer title of all of our assets to our revocable trusts. He made himself accessible and advised us on health care directives, powers of attorney, and other legal matters at a time when we needed it most.
When David passed away (approximately one year later), Bob was a sensitive and reassuring influence for me during this very emotional time. Due to the plan Bob had prepared, the administration of David’s estate was greatly simplified and no probate was necessary. Bob took care of all of the details and the administration was completed in less than four months. I highly recommend him to other families in need of an estate plan or probate. “ — Judy Goodchild, Madison, GA
